Falling asleep was difficult for Ricket. He knew there’d been something strange about the family, but he would never have guessed they were hunters. Even after all of Rickard’s arguments at the orphanage, he still hadn’t been fully convinced. Not until he saw the cupboards with all of the potions.

Even the weapons hadn’t clinched the deal. Anyone could own weapons, but he’d never seen potions like that. There was too much evidence.

What did I expect, super powers?

And what was a hunter, anyway? One who hunts, and if properly trained, went out at night to face the darkness haunting the streets. That was all there was to it, right?

Sometime during his reflection he fell asleep.

When he woke in the morning, Lincoln was already standing at the foot of his bed, clad in black, with a half-smile on his face.

Mitzy charged in when she heard Ricket stirring and his stretch was cut short by a sniffing nose and licking tongue. He laughed and rolled away from her, but that only encouraged her to jump on his bed and hunt for his face with her very wet nose.

“Okay, I’m up,” he said, hopping out of bed.

“Ferocious beast, that one,” Lincoln said, pointing at the dog.

Ricket slid his shirt over his head and straightened the bed.

“It’s too early,” he yawned. “You guys were out all night hunting. Don’t you sleep in?”

“Right, we were hunting. You were swilling coffee at home with mom. You should be well rested.” Lincoln shrugged. “Besides, the best training is in the morning.”

Ricket groaned.

“Get washed up, mom’s making breakfast. Then we will train.” Lincoln turned to leave. “Wear something comfortable, you’re sparring with me this morning.”
